About Us

The Kai Kete is a whānau (family) owned and operated café run local Tokoroa couple, Te raurangi (Tee) & Arihia Maniapoto. Passionate about Māori cuisine and kotahitanga; bringing people together, the Maniapoto's fulfilled their dream of owning their own cafe in the spring of 2020.

Tee, an ex-All Black rugby player, qualified chef and barista can be found in the kitchen creating dishes inspired by traditional Māori recipes fused with oriental or European flavours. Arihia is the heart and soul of The Kai Kete and an active member of the community, driving local initiatives to help business growth and youth empowerment. Arihia will be the smiling face that greets and welcomes you to The Kai Kete.

Sustainability - Kaitiakitanga

We believe in environmentally friendly and sustainable business practices which are incorporated through the following three pillars;

Sourcing & Supporting Local
We care about both our local businesses and minimising our carbon footprint therefore source all of our kai from local growers and farmers within the Waikato region.

Cutlery & Coffee
We choose to use eco-friendly, fully recyclable (or reusable!) dining utensils and takeaway packaging crafted from bamboo. You'll find sugarcane straws in our shakes and fair trade coffee in your refillable cup.

Recycling & Compost

We minimise our waste by reusing the bags and packaging our kai is delivered in and select unpackaged goods where possible. All kai scraps go to one of our local farmers daily, which helps to grow the vegetables they supply us with.
